Fire compartmentation is the practice of dividing a building into fire-resistant compartments to delay the spread of fire from one part of the building to another, or to an adjoining building. A fire compartment is defined as a building or part of a building comprising one or more rooms, spaces or storeys constructed to prevent the spread of fire to or from another part of the same building or an adjoining building.

Document B, Volume 2 (2019) defines fire compartments as; -“A building or part of a building comprising one or more rooms, spaces or storeys constructed to prevent the spread of fire to or from another part of the same building or an adjoining building.”

Between 30- 120-minute fire resistance is achieved with the provision of fire resisting walls and floors. It will include special measures to any openings in the compartment lines, such as doors, glazing, service penetrations and ductwork.

During the designed period (30-120minutes) The compartment wall or floor should remain operational, not crack or develop holes that allow flames, smoke or hot gases to pass through it, and if appropriate, it should maintain a suitable degree of insulation. Before escape routes are possibly compromised by the spread of fire and smoke, fire compartmentation provides additional time to evacuate and decrease the level of exposure.
