As its name implies, the Abbey Hotel is indeed close to the imposing building and adjoining square. Dating from Georgian times and accredited as being designed by Wood as merchant’s houses, the hotel now offers quality accommodation in the heart of this ancient city. During the summer the building is adorned with multi-colored blooms tumbling from plant boxes fixed to its lower windowsills and the railings outside. All rooms are en-suite and there is a lift and a ground floor bedroom for those who cannot manage the stairs.
MEC contractors spent the month of June 2024 completing the necessary fire compartmentation works. Fire compartmentation is the practice of dividing a building into fire-resistant compartments to delay the spread of fire from one part of the building to another, or to an adjoining building. Between 30- 120-minute fire resistance is achieved with the provision of fire resisting walls and floors. It will include special measures to any openings in the compartment lines, such as doors, glazing, service penetrations and ductwork. This work is essential to the safety of the hotel for all guests in 62 rooms, as well as the staff.
